Cuban Cohiba Brand

Cohiba was originally a private brand that supplied Cuban cigars exclusively to Fidel Castro and high-level Cuban officials. In 1966, the first three models of the Cohiba brand were released, but in very limited quantities. These were the Cohiba Lanceros, the special Cohiba Coronas and the Cohiba Panetelas.

It wasn’t until 1982 when the worldwide commercial production of these cigars started.

Brief History of Cohíba Cigars

When the first Cohiba cigars were available to the public, they were an instant hit with cigar lovers. They quickly became the most coveted vitolas in the world.
In 1989, the introduction of the Cohiba Esplendido, the Cohiba Robustos and the Cohiba Exquisito was made. These three cigars, along with the original three Cohibas, are known as the La Linea Clasica (the Classic Branch).

To commemorate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Colombus’ discovery of the New World, Habanos SA introduced the Linea 1492 In 1992 under the Cohiba name.

Each of the 5 cigars in this line represents a century: Cohiba Siglo I (tiny corona), Cohiba Siglo II (petit corona), Cohiba Siglo III (corona), Cohiba Siglo IV (large corona) and the Cohiba Siglo V (Lonsdale).

A Cohiba Siglo VI was added in 2002.

The Making of a Cohiba Cigar

The tobacco used in Cohiba cigars is some of the finest grown in Cuba. They are taken from first-class plantations found in the San Luis and San Juan region, in the Pinar del Rio province.

A very unique feature about Cohiba is the tobacco used to make the cigars undergoes through three fermentation processes. While this process may be costly and time-consuming, it gives the tobacco leaves a unique flavor, but also a very soft texture and very light color. It’s what gives Cohiba cigars their finesse and refinement.

Originally, the El Laguito factory in Havana produced all the Cohiba cigars. It employed some of the best cigar rollers in the world. However, sometime later other Cohiba vitolas were being made in other cigar factories.

The word “cohiba” was the name given to the rolled tobacco leaves smoked by the indigenous people that lived on the island.
