Trinidad Cuban Cigars
Introduction
Only made available as of 1998, Trinidad Cuban cigars have been around since 1968 and were considered the rarest brand in the world. Manufactured specially for Fidel Castro since 1980, the only time these cigars left Cuban shores is when they were gifts to the foreign guests.
For the longest time it was believed that Cohibas had been adopted as diplomatic gifts. It wasn’t until an article in Cigar Aficionado revealed that for almost ten years Trinidads were being used instead.
A connoisseurs’ brand, Trinidad was made available to the public with only one size – the Funadores. In 2003, the range was expanded to four vitolas. These superior-quality cigars are handmade in the El Laguito cigar factory only. They use the same tobacco blend as Cohiba cigars, but do not go through the Cohiba three-step fermentation process.
The Flavors of Trinidad Cigars
Trinidad cigars embody a wide range of complex flavors. Medium-bodied with complex and expressive flavors, amateurs will find these cigars to be well-rounded, smooth and more in the style with Partagas cigars than a Cohiba.
Rich, earthy flavors, herbal, floral and hints of bean epitomize Trinidad in taste. Hints of dark cocoa, coffee and sweet woody aromas also emerge. The flavors are mild, pleasant and constant throughout the length of the smoke.
Not surprisingly, stocks of these prized Cuban cigars remain hard to find.
Trinidad Cigars Range
Trinidad cigars are made in format sizes that are exclusive to the brand. This is done to emphasize their unique and important position in the Habanos family of cigar brands. They are packaged in the unorthodox quantity of 24 cigars as well as in cabinets of 50.
Some of the more popular models from Trinidad include:
Trinidad Reyes cigars offers a nice quick smoke, full of coffee and nutty flavors. Slightly longer than the Montecristo No. 5 cigars, these perfectly balanced cigars full of character. Some aging is recommended.
Trinidad Robusto Extra cigars are the largest of the three new formats added to the range in 2003. Regarded as premium cigars, they have an elegance that must be experienced. Complex, smooth and creamy with leathery hints and outstanding aromas, Robusto Extra cigars provide a refinement that is quite a rare. These are premium cigars.
Trinidad Fundadores cigars were the first Trinidads introduced back in 1998. Funadores have the classic Cuban tobacco blend with rich bold flavors of leather, nuts, honey and coffee, to name a few. Medium-to-full bodied, this unique size exclusive to Trinidad is slightly smaller than the Cohiba Lancero. These are cigars for the connoisseur.
Trinidad Coloniales cigars are made with a superb quality, flavors and aromas. These cigars have a good, but not dominating, Cuban tobacco flavors with evolving hints of chocolate and coffee notes with an underlying hint of vanilla. Although they possess a subtleness and enough complexity to delight real connoisseurs, they really should be aged for at least a few months to develop its characteristics.
